There are 3 Steps to the Legal Process

We list the 3 steps to the Legal Process below:

Step 1 - Check List

To become a driving instructor in the UK, you must check that you:

  1. Have held a driving licence for at least 2.5 years.
  2. That you can read a licence plate at 90 feet (27.5m) – glasses or contacts are OK.
  3. That you have no more than 6 points on your licence. ( If you have 6, talk to us)
  4. That you are happy for the Government (DVSA) to complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

Step 2 - Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Disclosure Check

Next, you must obtain a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Disclosure Number.

To do this, call GBOnline on 0845 251 5000 and complete the application form they send you and return to them ASAP.
Or complete the application online by clicking here: online and register your details. You will need your email address and be asked to create a password.

You will need the following information:

  • the organisation PIN of ‘105205’
  • the ‘secret word’ which is ‘axis’
  • the organisation name of ‘DVSA – PDI (PO)’

This can take approx 2- 6 weeks.

GBOnline will write to you enclosing a copy of your disclosure certificate and number. (You must now complete Step 3 within 6 months or your CRB will expire)

Step 3 - DVSA ADI 3

Once you have received your CRB Disclosure Number, you may now register as a PDI (Potential Driving Instructor) and receive your Personal Reference Number (PRN) which you will need to book your tests.

To do this, you can apply by post or online.

To apply by post, complete your ADI3 (click here) and return to DVSA address on form.

Or to apply online, click here: Online You will need:

  • your driving licence number
  • your CRB Disclosure Number and the date it was produced (unless you’ve been told not to get one yet)
  • details of any motoring or non-motoring offences, and disqualifications from driving or of any court cases being brought against you

The DVSA will write to confirm your registration and PRN.

This whole process can take about 4-6 weeks so we advise starting your studies ASAP and complete Part 1 whilst this process is completed.

You now have your DVSA PRN (personal reference number). You may now book your 1st test when ready.

Once again, if you have any queries about any of this process, please do call us on :

The Training course for the ADI certificate has been very well developed and delivered. All aspects of the course are developmental and put into practice as you progress. Manageable timelines and targets are set, this allowed me to be organised and set time aside to complete the work to the timelines. All this while working at the same time. The support is outstanding and available as and when required, by email or phone. The strange and unexpected experience to arise is that I feel that while completing the online and live driving course, all of the staff I have been involved with within the course delivery have made me feel as though I was an important part of the team. In short, outstanding course materials, delivery, online support, face to face support and very professional staff.
