The Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) Part 1 test is a theory test. It’s the first of 3 tests you have to pass to qualify as an ADI.

The Part One Test of Theory and Hazard Perception test is in 2 parts; all done in the same 90 minute test.

multiple Choice

You will be asked 100 questions. These are split into 4 sections and you will be asked 25 from each section.

The 4 categories are:

  • road procedure
  • traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
  • driving test, disabilities, and the law
  • publications and instructional techniques

The question and several possible answers will appear on a computer screen. Some will need more than one answer.

You must get 20 in each section with a total of 85 across the 4 sections.

Hazard Perception

You will be shown a series of 14 video clips. Each clip has a series of potential hazards and you must click to identify you have seen a potential hazard.

One hazard will make you change speed, course or direction. This is a scoring hazard. You are scored from 5 down to 1 point. The sooner you identify the hazard, the higher the score.

One clip will have 2 scoring hazards.

You can score a maximum of 75 but need 57 to pass.

Cost

You may take this test as many times as you like.

You must pay the DVSA £81 for this test.

The Training course for the ADI certificate has been very well developed and delivered. All aspects of the course are developmental and put into practice as you progress. Manageable timelines and targets are set, this allowed me to be organised and set time aside to complete the work to the timelines. All this while working at the same time. The support is outstanding and available as and when required, by email or phone. The strange and unexpected experience to arise is that I feel that while completing the online and live driving course, all of the staff I have been involved with within the course delivery have made me feel as though I was an important part of the team. In short, outstanding course materials, delivery, online support, face to face support and very professional staff.
